CATANIA, a mixture of ancient and new, is located on the east side of Sicily, at the foot of one of worlds most active volcanoes, Mount Etna. The volcano, has erupted many times leaving the town itself, in two dominating colours- black and white- therefore producing a magnificent visual and unique effect. Rich in folklore, history and beauty, the city has been honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site perfect for a stroll through history.
In addition, Catania houses sicily’s oldest university, one of the most vibrant fish markets on the island, and offers hundreds of bars, clubs and eateries that cater to the city’s fun-loving (largely student) population. Summer temperatures can exceed 40° degrees, so bustling beaches and open air concerts make Catania one of Italy’s hot spots both in the day and night.
